On the invitation of the Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR), curators-filmmakers Ingel Vaikla and Julie Pfleiderer curated a film program that emphasizes the potential of architecture through the themes of cultural heritage, nature, and land. In parallel to this years’ overarching theme, IT’S ABOUT TIME, the IABR looks at the role of time as an important ingredient of designing for an architecture of change. With the effects of climate change on our doorstep, how can we reimagine the intrinsic relationships between the present and the past, between local and global, and between humans and both other beings and ecosystems?
The selected films promote nuance and gesture of space over paternalistic attitudes of classification and domination. They propagate the reconstruction of community, the rewriting of unjust histories, and the establishment of dialogue with nature and with more than human species in order to explore different ways of living together in the future we desire.
After the films, a panel will take place with writer and IT’S ABOUT TIME cocurator Véronique Patteeuw and filmmaker Jacques Perconte, moderated by Saskia van Stein.
